Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine which involves inserting thin acupuncture needles into the skin at specific acupuncture points to achieve a therapeutic effect. Acupuncture points exist along lines or meridians that are mapped along the body. It is believed that energy or ‘Qi” flows along these lines and proper flow of this energy is necessary for healthy functioning of the body.

Acupuncture needles are sterile and very thin and do not cut the skin as they are inserted therefore they cause minimal discomfort. When a needle is properly placed it is associated with a dull, achy feeling in the tissue. This is known as ‘da Qi’ and is important for the effectiveness of treatment. The needles are left inserted for 30-45 minutes and may be stimulated during this time to assist the flow of energy. The acupuncture treatment lasts one hour and is accompanied by massage prior to insertion of the needles or following their removal.
